Kryn couldn’t remember ever feeling so…content. The haze from Stefan’s feeding coupled with the intense climax they’d shared left her weak muscles languid. With half her body draped over his, her head nestled on his chest, she let herself fade into the comfort of sleep.

But when the nightmares came for her, he was there. Whispering in her ear. “Kryn. Baby, wake up. You’re safe. I won’t let anyone hurt you again.”

She jerked in his arms, her wings flapping in a desperate attempt to flee, though she still lacked the strength to fly.

“Kryn. Look at me.” His commanding voice, the old world British accent, and the scent of him calmed her, and she peered up at him, tears lining her eyes. “Do you know where you are?”

“With you,” she managed as she dug her fingers into his side, needing to know he was real. “Stefan.”

“Good girl.” He stroked her feathers, all the way down to her ass. “What did you dream?”

She didn’t want to relive the horrors that were done to her, but he deserved to know. And strangely, she needed him to know. “Dante kept me in that fucking cage the entire time. Sometimes, he’d just leave me suspended high enough above the flames it was just painful. Enough to burn me—like the worst sunburn ever—but not blacken my skin.”

Stefan’s muscles coiled under her touch, his anger almost a physical presence between them. “I know the Hellion. And I will end him.” Each word escaped on a growl.

Kryn spread her wings to prove this wasn’t the true dream. “I was…burning. He lowered me into the flames. Screamed at me. When I wouldn’t break, he waited until I…died. Then he transported me to the ice lake..”

“The ice lake?”

“There’s another cavern. Just past where you found me. Deeper. At the bottom, there’s a lake. The water is freezing. There’s always a layer of ice on top of it and tiny ice chips all through it. He dropped my cage. Let me sink. It’s like being submerged in a slushy. But one where the shards of ice are tiny little knives that shredded my skin into thousands of pieces. And…when you woke me up…I was drowning. Like I did over and over again…every single time he threw me down there.” Kryn swiped at her cheeks, hating the tears she’d been unable to contain.

Stefan didn’t speak, but he pulled her closer and nuzzled her neck. “Do you want me to make you forget? I could glamour you. I have done so for several others in my centuries.”

Could she really forget? Staring down at her bare arms, at the latticework of pale scars that now covered almost every inch of her, she knew she couldn’t. “This is a part of me now,” she whispered. “I have to remember. It’s the only way I’ll ever be whole again.”

Gently, he tipped her face up and kissed her with such tender care, Kryn melted against him.

“Eat something for me,” Stefan said when he finally pulled away. He reached
